Deep Dive
1. Purpose & Value Proposition
Ondo's core mission is to democratize access to institutional financial products. It does this by tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs), such as U.S. Treasury bonds and money market funds, and making them tradable on blockchain networks. This process aims to provide the stability and yield of traditional finance with the 24/7 accessibility and efficiency of DeFi. A key product is USDY, a tokenized note backed by short-term U.S. Treasuries and bank deposits that offers a yield-bearing alternative to traditional stablecoins (CoinMarketCap). By bridging these two worlds, Ondo targets both retail users seeking better yields and institutions looking for compliant on-ramps to digital assets.
2. Technology & Governance
The ecosystem is powered by two main technological pillars: the Ondo DAO and Ondo Chain. The ONDO token is primarily a governance token, granting holders voting rights on decisions related to the Ondo DAO and its governed protocols, notably Flux Finance (LCX). For its infrastructure, Ondo is developing its own layer-1 blockchain, Ondo Chain. Launched in February 2025, it's built with the Cosmos SDK and is EVM-compatible. It's specifically designed for institutional use, featuring permissioned validators (regulated financial institutions) and RWA-backed staking to align network security with real-world collateral (Cosmos).
Conclusion
Ondo is fundamentally a hybrid financial infrastructure project that tokenizes traditional assets and is building a dedicated blockchain to serve institutional needs. How effectively will its permissioned, compliant model attract the trillions in capital needed to fulfill its vision of on-chain global finance?
