The ORIGINAL Magic Internet Money coin from 2013. Revived on Solana.
Magic Internet Money, also known as MIMcoin or MIM, was an early cryptocurrency project originally launched in 2014 during the Bitcointalk-era altcoin market. At that time, most new cryptocurrency projects were standalone proof-of-work blockchains created by modifying existing Bitcoin or Litecoin-derived codebases. MIMcoin was part of that early altcoin environment and was presented as a cryptocurrency using the name “Magic Internet Money” and the ticker MIM.
The original 2014 project was not a smart-contract token, DeFi asset, or token launched on another network. It was a standalone Layer 1 cryptocurrency associated with the Franko Coin / Litecoin-style altcoin lineage. Its Bitcointalk announcement used the title “[ANN][MIM] Magic Internet Money” and referenced merge mining with FRK, reflecting the technical norms of that period.
Historically, MIMcoin existed during the first wave of experimental altcoins, before the modern memecoin category, Solana token launches, Ethereum ERC-20 culture, and DeFi branding became standard. The project combined proof-of-work altcoin mechanics with meme-based internet-native branding at a time when most cryptocurrency communities formed through forums, mining pools, block explorers, wallets, and small exchanges.
Over time, the phrase “magic internet money” became widely used across crypto as a general cultural phrase for cryptocurrency itself. Later projects also used the same or similar name, including unrelated DeFi stablecoin projects and meme tokens. Because of that, the original 2014 MIMcoin is now commonly distinguished from later uses by referring to it as the original Magic Internet Money, MIMcoin, or Magic Internet Money OG. CoinMarketCap currently has a page for Magic Internet Money OG describing it as the original version listed on CoinMarketCap.
The current version of Magic Internet Money represents a revival or continuation of the original MIMcoin identity in the modern crypto market. Unlike the 2014 version, which was its own proof-of-work blockchain, the current market-facing version exists in the context of today’s token ecosystems, exchanges, aggregators, and meme-coin infrastructure. CoinGecko currently lists a Magic Internet Money market page, with trading activity shown on Solana-based venues such as PumpSwap.
